Ethylene Glycol Monobutyl Ether (abbreviated as EGBE; also known as Butyl Cellosolve, 2-Butoxyethanol, CAS No.: 111-76-2, EINECS No.: 203-905-0, UN No.: 2810) is an important derivative of ethylene oxide and a versatile glycol ether organic solvent with the molecular formula C₆H₁₄O₂ and a molecular weight of 118.17. It is a colorless and transparent liquid at room temperature with a mild ethereal odor, a melting point of about -70℃, a boiling point of 171℃, a flash point of 60℃ (closed cup), and a density of 0.902g/mL (25℃). It has excellent solubility — due to the presence of both lipophilic ether bonds and hydrophilic hydroxyl groups in its molecular structure, it is miscible with water, ethanol, ether, mineral oil, and most organic solvents, known as the "universal solvent". With stable chemical properties, difficult decomposition, and multiple functions such as solvent, coupling agent, and plasticizer, it is low-toxic and environmentally friendly, an indispensable basic chemical raw material in industrial production, widely used in coatings, cleaning, daily chemicals, pesticides, and many other core fields, and also an important intermediate in organic synthesis.
