Toluene (Methylbenzene, CAS: 108-88-3) is a core basic product in the aromatic hydrocarbon chain. Industrial-grade toluene is widely used as coating diluent, ink solvent and gasoline blending component. Toluene for disproportionation is the key feedstock for benzene and xylene production, while toluene for HDA process corresponds to the hydrodealkylation route. Many foreign trade enterprises also handle export-grade barreled toluene for overseas orders. Recently, affected by geopolitical disturbances and domestic supply-demand games, the toluene market has retreated after hitting a phased peak, with obvious divergence between bulls and bears.

1. Key Market Focus This Week

1.1 Recurring Geopolitical Risks, High Crude Oil Supports Costs

The core variable of the market this week still lies in overseas geopolitics. The US-Iran stalemate continues with unresolved risks of escalation. Meanwhile, Saudi energy facilities still face attack risks from Houthi forces, and market concerns over crude oil supply disruption have not fully dissipated. In addition, the market generally expects that after the US midterm elections, short and high-intensity military actions against Iran cannot be ruled out, further strengthening expectations of high oil prices.

1.2 Narrowing Asia-US Spread, Compressed Export Arbitrage Space

The average Asia-US toluene spread stood at 445.3 USD/ton this cycle, down 63.27 USD/ton from the previous period. The continuous narrowing of the spread directly compresses the arbitrage space for domestic toluene exports, reduces the willingness of foreign traders to sign orders, weakens the diversion effect of exports on domestic supply, and to some extent aggravates domestic oversupply pressure.

2. Domestic Market Review This Week

After hitting a phased peak, bearish sentiment gradually heated up in China’s toluene market this week, with overall trading atmosphere obviously cooling. Regional performance varied with different supply-demand game characteristics.

2.1 Shandong Market: Differentiated Demand, Low Inventory Supports Prices

Shandong market showed a pattern of "differentiated demand and inventory-supported prices" this week. The narrowing spread between benzene and toluene squeezed HDA processing profits, significantly weakening HDA enterprises’ purchasing interest. On the contrary, the xylene-toluene spread recovered somewhat, improving the economics of disproportionation units and lifting procurement enthusiasm of disproportionation plants.

2.2 Guangdong Market: Ample Supply & Weak Demand, Minor Short-Covering After Price Cut

Guangdong market had relatively ample spot supply this week. Local refineries shipped large volumes, but weak downstream demand led to limited actual toluene consumption and mediocre refinery shipments. In the second half of the week, after refineries actively cut listed prices, traders carried out a wave of short-covering operations, driving a slight rebound. But the overall gain was limited with no substantial improvement in demand.

3. Market Outlook

As month-end delivery draws to a close, downstream negative feedback continues to ferment. Coupled with the drag from the sharp decline in related product benzene, bearish expectations for the toluene market have heated up. However, current crude oil cost support remains. Under cost pressure, after bearish sentiment is fully released, the market will most likely continue the stalemate consolidation pattern.

It should be noted that current export volume is still insufficient to absorb domestic oversupply. The short-term demand suppression is unlikely to improve significantly, and there is still room for a slight decline in toluene prices. For purchasers, the risk of chasing highs currently outweighs the benefits, and it is more prudent to restock on demand with appropriate inventory building at low levels. Future focus should be on geopolitical evolution, crude oil price fluctuations, benzene trends and downstream operating rate recovery.
